About Groom

The electorate of Groom is based around Australia's largest provincial inland city, Toowoomba, and covers much of Queensland's inner Darling Downs. Groom covers an area of 6452 sq km and other towns within the electorate include Pittsworth, Cambooya, Oakey, Highfields, Goombungee and Meringandan.
The electorate was named after Sir Littleton Groom 1867-1936, Member of the House of Representatives 1901 - 1929 and speaker of the House from 1926-29.
The Darling Downs region is well known for its rich and diverse range of products and industries including agriculture, retailing and food processing as well as for its high standard of educational facilities. It's home to the University of Southern Queensland, the Oakey Army Aviation Base and Weis' Frozen Foods, a second generation family ice-cream company which started with the original Weis bar in a corner store in Toowoomba in the 1930's.
The region is renowned for its fertile black soil with the major agricultural output being grain, beef, pork and legumes.
Toowoomba is reputed as the Garden City and is considered as one of the most attractive places to live in Australia. It's best known for its annual Carnival of Flowers and more recently the burgeoning Australian Gospel Music Festival.
Ian Macfarlane's office is located on the corner of Margaret and Duggan Streets in Toowoomba.
