Federal Member for Groom Ian Macfarlane today expressed disappointment at the decision of George Weston Foods to close its Toowoomba factory.

“This will be a blow not only to workers at the plant, many of whom have dedicated long years of service, but it is also a loss that will be felt through the entire community, given the factory’s historic association with the Darling Downs.

“While I understand this was a commercial decision made by the company following long deliberations, it will nonetheless be a difficult time for everyone associated with Don KRC Fresh Toowoomba.

“I have spoken with employees at various stages during the recent changes at the factory and am aware of the commitment and loyalty they have shown to their jobs.  These are skills that will assist in the transition to new employment.

“The company has advised me that it will meet its full obligations to employee entitlements and will provide assistance for workers looking for new jobs.

“I have also been advised that George Weston Foods intends to maintain its existing relationships with pig suppliers.

“I encourage anyone who may be in need of further advice about job-seeking assistance or accessing Centrelink services to contact my office.”
